How to Help your Teen with ASD Find a College Where They will be Happy and Successful

If you are starting to think about college, you are probably asking many questions. How do you help your son or daughter prepare for college? How do you assess if your child is ready for college? What supports and services will be available? How do you find the right fit for your student’s needs? Preparing for college is about more than grades, test scores, and a college list. It involves working on academic skills, as well as the less visible skills such as waking up on time, managing long-term projects and advocating for oneself.

Join us for a presentation in which we will discuss these issues and more as we review the college planning, preparation, and placement process. We’ll focus on practical skills that will allow your student to be HAPPY and SUCCESSFUL in college. We will explore the six essential skills for college success, what colleges are looking for, the types of accommodations and services that are available, how to promote college readiness and finding the “right fit”.

Speaker:
Sue Cook Christakos, College Consulting Collaborative

Sue Cook Christakos is a former attorney who, in this capacity, drafted policy pursuant to the American with Disabilities Act (ADA). She has also served as a reading tutor for Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS), and contributed time as a parent surrogate for MCPS, wherein she advocated on behalf of students pursuant to the Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act (IDEA). Sue currently works as an independent educational consultant for students with learning differences, assisting them with advocacy and independence skills, and ultimately helping find an appropriate college placement. She has a BA in Psychology from Bucknell University, and a Juris Doctorate from Georgetown University Law Center.

This is a lecture style event; the audience will primarily be listening to a speaker.	Teens are welcome at this event.
